The Collier County Planning Commission has recently taken a significant stand against a proposed development project that sought to introduce 750 luxury apartments, including 225 units designated as affordable housing, within the serene environs of Fiddler’s Creek in East Naples. This expansive project was planned for a roughly 50-acre area designated for recreation within a larger 600-acre parcel earmarked for conservation purposes. The recommendation to deny this development came after several intense and often contentious public hearings conducted in April and May.
The commissioners reached a unanimous decision on Thursday, voting 4-0 against an amendment to the county’s growth management plan. This amendment, if approved, would have allowed the construction of the apartment complex in an area that has been set aside primarily for conservation and recreational activities.
